I did not expect a large turn-out at today's event but was still happy to see that people showed up. There were maybe 150 in attendance. Not bad for a weekday. This gathering was at noon, with a march to follow at 3PM. I did not stay for the march. Unfortunately, the sky opened up and it poured buckets. My sign was safe because I had protected it with plastic wrap. There was also a big fire downtown, so a lot of firetrucks sped by, making it hard to hear.
Once the main portion was over and people started to disperse, many of us stayed behind displaying our signs facing the street. There was only one negative drive-by. I also spent time speaking with one of the organizers, which was very useful. It was worth it to go. The bus took extra time, but I got my ride in both directions without having to wait. Fare was $4, a little less than what I would have paid to park (if I found a space). The next march is on May 17th and is a woman's march -- which will be held across the country.

Tommy's car was available in the afternoon, and he asked me to pick him up ingredients to make a pasta salad. He's having a "Beer Boy" evening on Friday and has been assigned a salad for his meal contribution. Price Rite has red peppers for $1.49 a pound and also sells our favorite pasta. In addition to his salad ingredients, I got linguini for us, along with a few good buys I just couldn't pass up. Chicken thigs are 99 cents per pound and in the plastic sealed packages I like so much. There was also marked down salmon. While they never mark the meat and fish down 50% the way Save-a-Lot and Aldi do, I never see marked down salmon -- so the 30% reduction was worthwhile. Once home, I kept the salmon in the original packaging but also protected them with vacuum seal bags.
Dinner was air fryer breaded chicken and butternut squash ravioli with mushrooms. The mushrooms were marked down too! I came across the ravioli while putting the fish and chicken into our chest freezer. My estimate is that dinner for both of us was five dollars. There's a little bit left for lunch tomorrow too. And of course, I'll be saving bones for stock.
We are really lucky that we don't have to worry about having enough food to make a meal. Having the means to stock up when a bargain can be found is something I consider a real privilege. Even if we earn the money to be able to afford it all. I am not looking forward to what is going to happen with the economy but know we're going to get by. But I'll be out at the next march because I know plenty of people won't be OK. Many of them don't know or don't care what's going on, but I do!
I admire your marching! Great food bargains. I don’t do the grocery shopping so rely on Hubby who goes to the Grocery Outlet first but is very list driven rather than browsing.
ReplyDeleteThank you Juhli! If I let Mr. Murphy shop, we would spend two to three times as much...
DeleteSorry, that comment was from Juhli
ReplyDeleteYou keep right on marching, we need to do more of that in Canada as well. Just like you we will be fine and able to put food on the table. I do worry about others though. There are so many that are not at all prepared for what could be coming.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Thank you Jackie! I just wish I could get more of my friends involved. They complain a lot, but don't actually protest.
DeleteI love that you’re marching. My daughter will be interested in the women’s March for sure.
ReplyDeleteThank you Belinda! I have already started my women's march sign. I am hoping it won't be an overly warm day as I'd like to dress with a bit of a sufferagette vibe.
