One Meal Leads to Another

Dinner tonight was an Asian soup based on the pork and shrimp stock I made yesterday. With such a strange flavor profile, Asian really was the only taste I could imagine. There was already pepper, onion, mushroom, and shrimp on hand -- so I was half-way there.

I knew I could find broccoli slaw and pork on FlashFood. My goal was convenience, so the slaw option was the best bet. Tops slices their pork really thin, so I knew I'd just need poultry shears to cut strips. The store I ordered from was in a plaza adjacent to a Regal Cinema, so it made sense to combine a grocery stop in with a matinee.

I decided to load up on turquoise and lapis today. The necklace and earring set is one of my favorites. A lot of these pieces don't get enough wear and seemed appropriate for the tenor of the picture we went to see. The Phoenician Scheme seemed like my kind of dark comedy. And it did not disappoint.  While it was probably a little too out there for Tommy, he got movie theater popcorn out of it (what a rip-off).  One piece I did not wear because I hadn't thought to dig it out, was a Tilley hat. It would have gone well with my ensemble -- and it was raining too!

Pork always has extra fat to be dealt with, and today's tray was no exception. There were bones, meat, and fat to make use of. While we ate the meat, I prepared the fat and bone for canine consumption. Frankie and I are headed to see her Aunt Robbin on Wednesday. Robbin just finished weaning a litter of puppies and has a second bitch who is gestating another batch of Brittanys.  While Tootsie's babies are weaned, she is super thin. And when Emma whelps, she will need the extra fat for fuel as she nurses. I am bringing down this batch along with two small jars of fat and drippings from the Frankie food I made this week. I boiled the bones in the pot of a double boiler and steamed the fat separately. I didn't want to risk any bone getting in with the fat in case a puppy got a hold of any of it.

Robbin raises chickens so we will be coming home with dozens of eggs. I need to think of other goodies to bring her in thanks. We will be passing along Frankie's heat pants, since her spay is next month. The girlie will get play time with her cousins, and likely some solid field time.

Do you save the fat and use the trimmings from your cuts of meat too?

  1. I believe there is a bag in the freezer of mixed meat trimmings to use for stock. :)

  2. Yay! I'm so pleased that you enjoyed The Phoenician Scheme! Wasn't it fantastic? Wes Anderson films are a joy, you take a seat and get lost in the incredible cinematography and crazy plot and just smile!
I love your Lapis and Turquoise rings! I want!

    1. As soon as I saw the Renoir painting above his daughter's bed, I knew it would be a visually stunning production! The entire vibe was exquisite!

  3. Oh yes, we’ve always saved the fat from cooking meats. You got some good deals on FF and your soup looks delicious. I like the thinner pork chops as they are easy enough to get tender while cooking.

  4. I need to work on saving the fat from at least the bacon. I have heard it leaves a lovely taste. Wow, love your Lapis and Turquoise jewelry. So beautiful.

    God bless.
