We are a Dog House!

If I am posting pictures of meatloaf, chances are it's dog food! However, if there is just one loaf, maybe it could be for us. But today was a dog food day.

I got up early enough to get to Save-a-Lot within an hour of opening. We were down to our last container of dog food, and I wanted to buy pork for our party this weekend. One of our guests is allergic to chicken -- and Frankie is a bit sensitive to it too. That's why I am always looking for marked down pork. The meat gods were smiling upon us. There were two "Family Size" (large) trays of boneless picnic style ribs. Two trays of ground beef too. The batch of food for Frankie consisted of five pounds of ground beef, plus about 2/3 of a tray of pork cut into cubes. Filler for her meat loaves were mixed veggies, FlashFood butternut squash, and oats. As for the rest of the pork, it was cubed too and will be marinated, then grilled on skewers -- just like the chicken. We need one larger tray of chicken, which I will buy on Friday. Tops has it on sale for $1.99 per pound -- and even better price than I found at Aldi (and I had gotten two).

We needed to make oats for Frankie too. This batch was made with stock from our chicken wing discards, plus a little bit of the meatloaf grease. I mixed in a scoop of Super Greens. We don't feed her a lot of this in the summer, because she doesn't struggle to keep on weight in the warm weather like she does in winter. However, she needs some lunch, otherwise she is a total brat. So this time of year, her mid-day meal is mostly for entertainment value.

Her new clippers worked great. She didn't have a whole lot of growth on her neck, but I wanted to keep up with it. This is a before and after. It did a nice job on her ears too. I used a really tiny clipper to get to the hair between her pads, and the groin grooming one to do the tops of her paws. I also trimmed her hocks (the long area just above her back feet), and under her tail. We also clip her whiskers. She doesn't miss them or need them. When she is in the field, she is running so fast that they aren't picking up much information anyway.

The front of our house is coming along nicely. I had bought the garden flag last month, but forgot I'd donated the flag holder earlier in the season because we didn't have a flag. Walmart had them for five dollars, so I ordered one and got it within a day. Tommy put up the baskets a few weeks ago. That is actually a blueberry bush next to the mailbox, which has yet to ever bloom or bear fruit. Hopefully it will produce something this year! We tested the soil and added some peat moss to make it more acidic -- which it needed. It's a sunny but not scorching spot, so that might be part of the problem. It is three or four years old.

Tommy is doing a great job as our landscaper. He weeds daily and is always looking after the yard. He is really enjoying this part of retirement -- and I love having a yard that always looks nice. Of course, this heat is making it less enjoyable, but at least he is an early riser and gets it done before the full heat of the day kicks in.

Dinner tonight was salmon in the air fryer. One of the trays I got marked down from Price Rite. I topped it with apricot jam, a splash of honey ginger salmon marinade, and walnuts. I made the same salad as I did last night. We are finally done with the three heads of romaine lettuce from last week. We have a little bit of fish and rice for Tommy to have for lunch tomorrow. I will be swimming mid-day.

Life is good when you can keep your dog and your house looking nice!
