Sunday at Home!

I ventured out of the house to walk Frankie and after we got home, I tried to tackle the mess that is my car. We have a Weather Tech seat cover in the back, and it was so dirty with stains from her heat, hair, dirt, and who knows what else. The cover has been washed and is hanging to dry. I pulled out the floor mats and washed them, along with the baskets I keep behind the front seats. They are honestly there to catch a lot of the hair and dirt that would otherwise end up on the floor. Alas, I was unable to vacumm because it started to rain.

I have been buying things new. Mostly I order from Walmart and get free delivery. The XOX salad spinner replaces the one that broke. We needed one and I couldn't wait for a used piece to show up -- plus I wanted a good quality tool. The pet collar was a purchase based on the estimate we got for Frankie's spay. It was cheaper to buy one myself instead of using what the vet supplies, plus I don't like the hard cones. I'll drop this off when we bring her to the vet for the surgery. It's important to read estimates for this reason. They also included micro-chipping, which we don't need. Our breeder did the chipping, and had I not noticed it was part of the process, I would've spent an unnecessary $100. I do understand why they want pets chipped, but it's in her file that it's already been done. That's why you always want to see an estimate.

There's one more item on order that will be here Tuesday. A seat cover for Tommy's back seat. Now that he's not working, he can drive the dog around too! Hopefully, my car can go back to being reasonably clean. And my seat will always be properly adjusted. And I won't have to re-pair my phone or change the audio from sports radio.

It was stock day too! There was a bag of rib bones and the shells from a shrimp dinner. Since we were a little light on other stuff to simmer, I made a shrimp dinner tonight too. That meant more skins and tails to use. I also cut the ends and tips off a few heads of romaine lettuce, along with any leaves that looked a little cruddy. I also chopped the ends off a few onions and peeled them, saving the onions for dinner and something tomorrow. I was able to scrounge up enough odds and ends for flavor, and there was plenty of food for Dark Helmet. The bones went into the garbage, but all of the other dregs are now in compost. I will end up making some sort of Asian soup or stew with this stock.

Dinner was butternut squash ravioli (FlashFood) with shrimp and surplus veggies from last night's salad. There was some salad left, so that made it onto our plates too. Dessert was gelatin and watermelon chunks. This gelatin is strawberry, banana, carrots, and walnuts.  The base is made from juice. I am so glad to have gotten this idea from blogland!

Finally, this is something new I am starting. To be a little healthier, I am switching things up from using butter as a spread. I've made a 50/50 mix with EVOO and will be trying that as a spread for savory purposes. I am keeping the jar in the refrigerator where it will be more of a solid. Our butter normally stays out on the counter. Does anyone else do this? I am not a low-fat enthusiast -- I eat full fat dairy and am not an oil zealot either, but I know how much better olive oil is for us. So, I am hoping this will help us be just a little healthier. Thoughts?

Now I hope everyone has a wonderful week!

  1. That is a very nice salad spinner. I make garlic butter with olive oil and butter along with fresh garlic and it makes a great spread for garlic butter. It’s definitely healthy with the olive oil added. I need to make more fruit and gelatin cups today as we ate the last one yesterday.

  2. If only you were closer, I saw one of those pet collars and a salad spinner in the charity shop that sells discontinued Amazon stock for £2 each this morning!
    I love your compost pot!
When we used butter we never kept it refrigerated. We very seldom eat sandwiches these days, if we have bread its to accompany a salad and we just drizzle it with some extra virgin olive oil. xxx

    1. Again, I wish we weren't thousands of miles apart!

The countertop composter is nicely retro and enamel -- and it's paid for itself many times over too. It's not enough for something to be functional, it has to look good too! We do eat more bread than you do, and blow through olive oil almost like water. Then again, as I am Greek, it's probably what's pumping through my veins anyway...

  3. I love the pet collar, so much nicer than the cone of shame. Interesting idea about making a 50/50 mixture of butter and olive oil.

    God bless.

    1. Our last dog was a Golden, so not very bright. She had to wear the cone and one time I left the house, and she was in the kitchen. I realized that I forgot to wear earrings and turned around and went home. She had walked herself into a corner and wasn't sure what to do. I think she would've miserably been stuck there had I not gone home so quickly. That's when I bought my first doughnut. The one we had was way too big for Frankie.

We did have Border Collie who would bang herself up and need surgery rather frequently. For her, the cone was a game. She'd get a toy in it (or sometimes her water bowl) and whip it around like a centrifuge. It became a game. I am not sure what Frankie would do with a hard cone, but I imagine it would cause damage!
