A Productive Holiday

I thought it only fitting that I get our flag out and flying for Memorial Day. We go with a patriotic/red, white & blue theme up front.

Once American football season opens, a Buffalo Bills flag goes up.  But for most of the summer, we're flying the flag of our country. And I'd thought about flying it upside down too...

The Memorial Day sale at the Amvets thrift store was 50% off everything.  The box of glasses was the reason I decided to shop today. We are having a party for Tommy's retirement at the end of the month. Cheap wine glasses seemed like a good idea.  We'll have plenty, and at 25 cents piece, it won't matter if any break.  The birdhouse is for a farm-lady friend.  In total, I spent $24 (I rounded up again). My haul was one pillow (for outside), three 100% cotton sheets (for sewing), two men's shirts, a sweater for Tommy, and one for me. Mine is cashmere. Tommy's is cotton with a small amount of cashmere (I think the manufacturer just wanted to say that it was a cashmere blend, so they used the minimum).  None of the clothes look as if they've ever been worn!

Dinner tonight was based on marked down food from Save-a-Lot. The chicken was 99 cents per pound, and the bag of Southwestern salad mix was a buck.  I will be making stock tomorrow or the next day, and we'll have chicken breast for other meals. Of course, the discards will go to Frankie.

We strung lights for our outdoor living room -- the pergola area.  I only had two strands and didn't want to run a lot of cord, so the middle seemed the most logical place to position them.  There's still plenty to do for this space, but we are off to a good start.

I dug out a lot of the garden ornamentation. The posts were painted by yours truly.  While the front of the house is red, white, and blue, the back is black, white, and red.  There's a little blue here and there.  For the first three summers, we had small fencing up around some of the bushes to protect them from our one-dog wrecking crew.  But she's not as much of a menace now, so the entire garden is open to her.  The containers set up against the garage actually sit on three benches that had been around our fire pit. These had gotten chewed by rats, and Tommy hated them after a while. Two benches can be pushed together to make a picnic table. We're just using them as garden shelving.  These pots will get herbs and flowers for cutting.

Is your yard shaping up for summer? If you're in the US, did you do an actual holiday celebration? Or were you like me -- and just working it off?

  1. I stripped my bed and washed the sheets and blankets on the holiday. 😂 Your house is beautiful! I love the pots lined up on the row of benches, that looks great. And your fence posts reminds me of McKenzie’s Child, just beautiful.

    1. Thank you, Belinda! And I did forget to mention that I also stripped my bed and washed the sheets. I guess that's a fine holiday task. I was thinking of MC when I did the checked posts with the red top. For the harlequin ones, I was thinking of Ballard Design, circa 1995. Back then they did a lot of black and white with diamond patterns. I loved both design looks and that shaped my theme. Gonna stick with that in the back for sure.

  2. We have too many deer in our neighborhood to even try to garden. Sometimes we have a group of one to two dozen in our front yard at a time. We do have a fenced (tall) in area that Carey is preparing to put in a fall garden, and our back yard has tall fences so we have big pots of cherry tomatoes, large tomatoes, and jalapeno peppers.

    1. Our biggest critter issue is with squirrels and rats (the city equivalent of deer, I guess). Frankie does her best to keep them away. We did remove a large wood pile, so I do hope there is less shelter and hiding spots so that we succeed with tomatoes this year.

  3. Your house is lovely. Did you add the cladding? Is it brick underneath. I'm fascinated by architecture ! Your garden space is so welcoming and colourful. The benches used as shelving are great as are your hand painted pots!
Jon and I often laugh at how our charity shop buys are often unintentionally colour c-ordinated, yours are the same! xxx

    1. So kind of you to compliment Vix! Our house isn't brick under the cladding because it wasn't built when the neighborhood was established. That was 1954. Our house is from the early 1800's and was moved to this location when the neighborhood was built. We put vinyl siding on it because the shingled siding had disintegrated. They had to come off, and the original barnwood underneath was full of holes from a previous insulation job.

Just about everything in the garden is a re-use. Even a lot of the stone and brick in the garden bed. I do buy some pots new, but all the decor is used, repurposed, or created by me. We are lucky to have a good general contractor who takes my sketches and brings them to life. And I find if you open your mind to design, the sources to fulfill your imaginings will present themselves. It's all about looking and seeing!

    1. Thank you Billie Jo! I love your home too. I love looking at curated and collected environments. We all have different ways of executing our visions, with our varied acquisitions, and how we want to host our friends and family in our little world. Aren't we lucky?

    1. Thank you Juhli -- it's getting there! I can't wait to show off the pergola area once all the "furniture" is set.

    1. It's so kind of you to say Jackie! I am lucky to have a great general contractor and a devoted husband who do all of the heavy work. Tommy is the one who maintains it all -- I just dress it up!
