Cable and Cost Cutting
I wore a dress to the pool yesterday but didn't post anything because going to the pool was just about all I accomplished! The dress wasn't 99 cents. It was a Goodwill half price deal that was probably just two or three dollars. However, the shirt over it was a buck. I had to resew some seams and a rip or two, but it's 100% cotton and is a vintage Le Tigre, so it's right up my alley! The ballet flats are Jessica Simpson, and I never thought they'd be worn as much as they have been. My neighbor complimented me on my outfit when I was walking Frankie, so I guess it was a good combination.
I spent a lot of time today installing an ONN unit that was $20 from Walmart. It's an Android streaming gadget. It is a replacement for our cable converter box and cable subscription from Verizon. We were paying $224 per month for Internet, cable, and a land line. We ditched the land line too. Right now, we are just on Internet with a Youtube Premium subscription and are saving over $100. I might not even keep the Youtube add-on. This will take some behavioral modification, but we were wasting time and money sitting on the couch watching lots of news, interspersed with junk. We can read the news ourselves and spend less time on junk! Once I adapt to this, I might look for cheaper home internet. I do at least think our WIFI and Internet stuff is quicker because the other services aren't taking up bandwidth. We shall see...
We too have an internet/cable/landline package. The company that it is through kind of has us over a barrel, as when they contracted with the community to make it available, the deal they made was that they would be the only service available. Grrrr.
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to give up cable. The only reason we have it is so hubs can watch baseball...all baseball...all the time. Our son-in-law programmed a device for us that we can get tons of channels, so maybe once hubs gets used to it, he will let me cut cable.
PS: We also have YouTube premium, and it is the favorite subscription I have ever had...no ads, YAY!
DeleteTommy told me he wanted to become less invested in televised sports, so that made my decision to cut the cable a bit easier. Not having our land-line feels very odd! My adjustment period feels a little like a detox. Instead of watching live news/opinions, I wait until the next day and watch the segments (like the opening of the Rachel Maddow show) on Youtube -- and you're right, I love having no commercials!
DeleteYou get the best flashfood deals! We used to have that kind of internet/cable/landline package too. We dropped the landline when we moved and then dropped the cable for an indoor antenna box when we got Sonic for internet. Fortunately my husband mostly watches golf which he can still get. Un fortunately he decided he needed a better TV since our old one would no longer get Netflix. The new much larger tv led to a new tv stand but he is happy.
ReplyDeleteMy hubby loves golf too, but I think there is a sports viewing option that makes that possible. I was glad to not have to buy a new television, as I was afraid I might have to. The Onn box was only $20, so it was a cheap solution. We'll see how it goes. Adjusting to it is strange.
DeleteThat's a lovely relaxed look. I don't know Le Tigre other than it being a name of a current hipster Indie band.
ReplyDeleteWe pay £25 a month for the internet , £5.99 a month for Netflix and £14 a month for a TV licence, we don't have a landline any more. xxx
I always remember Le Tigre from the 70's/80's but it may be one of those brands that was resurrected for current use by a different company. But I have gotten a lot of good wearings out of that shirt so it was worth the dollar!
DeletePoliticians like to tell Americans that it costs more to live in our country, which is rubbish. I wish Internet was only $33 a month! And your museums are free too. Gees, I am envious!
Our internet, TV and landline are together. I would love to do just streaming things, but Harvey loves his sports way too much and in Canada it is hard to find an inexpensive streaming service for those. The only reason I keep a landline is because of my one brother. He would not answer my calls if he did not recognize the number calling and since he has schizophrenia I will probably be on my landline forever.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
We actually don't have a lot of options here either -- and we're near a decent sized metropolitan area. There are two providers and both are $$$. Legislation has opened the region up to other Internet service providers, so I hope to have better options over the next few years. Giving up the land line and all the emotional connections to it is really strange.
