Keeping At It!
The clothesline was out today too. We normally put our towels in the dryer every day between washing (every three days), but now I can put them out in the sun to air out. I aired out my nightgown too. Spritzing them with vodka and water might end up part of the routine, as that will kill any smells or mildew. However, the sun and hot temp should take care of that on its own.
I styled "Suburban Grandma" today because I had a lot of errands and some cooking to do. I was just thrilled to be wearing my yellow limon quartz ring. Since the weather is hot, I am letting my hair air dry, which means waves. My hope was that the sloppy side of my attire and hair would be balanced out by my jewelry. In the future, I might pick a yellow shirt that isn't too big (which I think this one is).
Thrifting was my first stop today. My goal was to find glassware for the party we are having at the end of the month. Last month, I got a dozen wine glasses. This week, it was beer and mixed drinks glassware. Monday is Senior Discount Day at Amvets, which is 25% off. The color tags I found were mostly 25% off too. I did find a nice pillowcase that was 99 cents (74 cents after senior discount), so my total was ten dollars (it's on the patio table). Pretty good, I think!
After thrifting, I picked up a FlashFood order. The deal on sesame oil was great. Now I have a couple of bottles on my tariff shelf. We use it a lot for stir fry, and for roasting salmon. We'll be set for mozzarella for a while too. I am making sauce tomorrow and we're having linguini for dinner, so the cheese will go on pizza for Wednesday. Well, some older cheese from the freezer will be used, and the new stuff will get used later. FF must be gaining popularity because I was there picking up with three other people!
This is a wine rack which I've mounted to the grid in back of our pergola area. My goal is to find colorful bottles or vases to put in it. It might even work as plant holder. Not sure. But I found it in the basement, so I'm using it!
It was a Frankie food day too. I used a tray of pork and a tray of beef -- marked down from Save-a-Lot two weeks ago. I had pork bones from dinner last night. This batch has a can of salmon, so I also had the liquid from that. The oatmeal I made had stock made from both, plus the drippings from the meat loaves. I used FlashFood rainbow slaw, along with a container of frozen hash browns I mixed up when making food last time. All of this food probably cost 8 dollars to make. The egg I mixed in was free!
I finished the day baking. This is a big sourdough loaf made with wheat-based starter (and I used wheat flour to feed it). The apple tart was made using frozen shells I wanted to get out of the freezer, and a cheap can of apples from Ollies (25 cents). Hopefully I will be disciplined enough not to touch it until tomorrow night.
Tommy is spending the night at the Cleveland Clinic, which is three hours away. He signed up to participate in a study that will take place over ten years, measuring his cognitive health as he ages. There are comprehensive health tests every year. He's getting a brain scan and sleep study this year. Another visit (next year, I am guessing), will probably involve his heart. We have a friend who just started working at the clinic and she's enrolled too, which is how Tommy learned about it. He's getting some free testing, plus he got to see a friend. Would you enroll in a test like that?
I would enroll in a study like that. The Cleveland Clinic has a wonderful reputation. The glasses from Amvets are perfect and what a bargain! Great FF deals, I’ve used that sesame oil and it has the best flavor. I like the wine rack idea and reminds me of those bottle trees, which I like. Your laundry looks nice hanging in the sunshine and I love your colorful clothes pins.
ReplyDeleteI thought I might find bottes at Dollar Tree, but no luck. Guess I'll just have to drink adult beverages in pretty bottles! Tommy was impressed with the CC, it sounds like they were very professional.
DeleteYour patio is so charming with all your special touches! I continue to be amazed at the great deals you find thrifting and with ff.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Juhli! I have more stuff to pull out of the garage. I've been slow to get everything out.
DeleteYes, Jon & I are all for being guinea pigs if it helps others. We registered as volunteers to help the NHS and Jon took part in a three year trial which finished last year.
ReplyDeleteLove your quartz ring and the wall mounted wine rack! xxx
The study aims to follow 20K people but so far only have 5.5. So I might enroll too. His hotel room had two queen beds. Once Frankie is spayed, we can easily drop her off with friends and go. We could fit in a little trip down there -- like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Frankie is in a similar study for dogs.
DeleteI think I would sign up for that study. Considering my Dad passed away due to a stroke and I have had a few Aunts and Uncles that had Alzheimer's and Dementia. I had never heard of spritzing clothing or towels with vodka. Very interesting.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
The vodka trick is used by theater folk so they can re-ware costumes and not have to launder. It's safe for most fabrics too. I think I am going to sign up too because they need more people in the study. Tommy said they were doing four evaluations the same night as him.
DeleteTwo of my sisters have passed due to dementia. I was happy to hear last week that the FDA has approved a blood test for cognitive decline conditions. It's not a one and done test, but it does help doctors make earlier diagnosis.
ReplyDeleteA dear friend of mine died from early onset Alzheimers, and now I have a friend who has been diagnosed as early stage. I was so disheartened to see US funding for research cut. I hope the blood test makes it to market.
DeleteYou are very good at shopping for bargains! I shop at Op Shops for glassware as occasionally we break one of a set and I like to have a complete set. I use my "good" glassware now as no point waiting for special occasions to enjoy fine glassware. I love your spectacular ring, I am sure it would have brightened up your day.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Rosie! My guy likes matching glassware, so I don't thrift odds and ends. But this was fun because I found pairs and sets of four too. Our everyday dishware is actually bone china!
