Walking Frankie at the Buffalo History Museum wasn't in my plan today. I was thinking we'd go to the cemetery. But then I saw that Flash Food had a great price on blue corn chips. These are our favorite and they are very reasonable at Aldi, but I haven't seen them in the store for a while. Going to the Grant Street Tops put me in the opposite direction of the cemetery, so I decided we'd walk closer to the store.
Before leaving the Tops parking lot, I decided to see what the Dash Mart was trying to get rid of. I specifically wanted heavy cream -- and they had it! They also had a produce box (two bags of Gala Apples for five bucks), and a cheap loaf of sour dough bread. I have starter but not the motivation to bake a loaf. I did really save a lot off the regular retail.
When you look at these ingredients, do you think "ice cream?" That tub is dark chocolate humus. It's pretty strange on its own, but I thought it would be an interesting flavor base and also add some dietary fiber. The caramel could be another interesting sweetener. One thing that shocked me, was that the humus had trans fat! This means I won't be repeating this combo.
The three ingredients made the exact amount for my container. It's in the freezer now. I will probably churn it in another couple of days, as we are still working on my last batch.
I have to admit I am a bit of an impulse buyer when it comes to groceries. Since I look for deals, it's not that bad of a habit. But I do bring home a strange assortment of items and make do with what I can find for cheap.
I did stop into Save a Lot because a friend told me her store had turkey breast for .29 cents per pound. My store didn't have that, and there was no marked down meat. Tomorrow is another day, and they tend to mark down meat on Tuesdays -- so I will look again tomorrow. I'll have to get up earlier than usual because I plan to watch the Westminster Kennel Club dog show in the afternoon. We've been encouraged to enter Frankie the past few shows, but it's just too expensive. I love her, and I love her in the ring -- but a show like that would cost around three thousand dollars. Any ribbon would be prestigious but just doesn't make financial sense for us. So, we've given up on that dream. Would you have entered her if you were me?
I enjoy shopping for markdown groceries too. The ice cream sounds good. That was neat finding the chocolate hummus, and too bad about the trans fat.
ReplyDeleteTrans fat is where I draw the line and had I known it was there, it would have been a quick pass. I like it when I can find healthy food at a good deal.
DeleteChocolate hummus? How bizarre! I wonder what the trans fat came from?
ReplyDeleteLove that photo of Frankie in the snow. That's a lot of money for a dog show - not tat I know anything about them - I'm sure Frankie would rather you spent the money on treats, toys and doggie coats! xxx
Chocolate humus is bizarre! I am guessing they added some sort of unhealthy processed oil for smoothness.
Delete3K for a show is a lot! For one this big, it would be $1500 for the handler, then there would be travel, lodging, etc. The best we would hope for would be one of the lower level ribbons, but with 24 entries, it would've been tough. And with a show this side, Frankie wouldn't be allowed to walk around the show and watch the other dogs. So it wouldn't be as much fun for her anyway!
