Produce Productivity

This was today's Flash Food haul. Tops Markets doesn't sell the best veggies.  Because of that, I prefer it when I can get them pre-packaged. The thing is, their loose stuff rots almost immediately.  But the branded pre-packaged doesn't -- however, it's convenient and thus very pricey.  Which is why I jump on Flash Food deals.

Vacuum sealing means I can freeze what I buy, and we have veggies that don't get soggy like the frozen bagged stuff that costs less.  One bonus is they were short one container of squash and told me to just grab one from the produce aisle.  The package I grabbed has a few extra days of freshness. I left that one up in the crisper drawer.   We had half a bag of beans with dinner, and I used the broccoli slaw in tonight's marinara.

Frankie of course was right there while I was repackaging my plant-based bounty, eagerly chomping anything I dropped.  I also fed her little pieces of slaw.  Chances are what I didn't use today will go into a batch of dog food Wednesday.

This week I found a cotton night gown at Amvet's.  I paid the full thrift price of four bucks.  It's nicely detailed and in very good condition.  I also made a quick night shirt from old sheet and pillowcase material.  It's very big, but that will give me room to move -- I am an active sleeper.  The sleeves are way long, which is also fine because my hands have to be warm/covered or I can't sleep.  Wierd, I know.

I went to the Not My President Day march.  It was abysmally cold -- 16f with 20 mph winds.  But there was a great turn out.  Most cars that passed honked and waved. A small handful gave us the middle finger or cursed at us.  MAGA folks are so civilized... not!

Dinner was chicken parm, with breast from my frozen $1.99lb stash.  The green beans were today's FF, and the mozzarella was 75% off FF too.  I cut the breasts in half lengthwise.  Some of the dredging flour was brown rice and mixed pea.  Rather than using an egg, I had ranch dressing -- which works really well. It's cheaper than using egg too!

And on a sort of amusing note, my check oil light came on while I was on my way home.  When I pulled into the supermarket, I wanted to add more oil.  That's normal for my car.  However, I could not get my hood opened.  It was frozen shut.  However, on the way home, I hit a pothole, and that did the trick.  Gotta love city driving!

Once I was home, I dumped a bunch of oil in and then went in and got warm.  And Frankie did not want to go out!

  1. Your Flash Food haul sounds like a great way to save and still get fresh produce, especially with the vacuum sealing trick! I love that you're getting creative with both your cooking and your clothing, like the nightgown and shirt you made. It’s those little DIY projects that add a lot of character to your routine.

And wow, that march must have been intense with those temperatures! It’s so interesting to hear about your experience with it, and it’s good to know that most people were supportive. Your chicken parm dinner sounds delicious, especially with the ranch dressing trick instead of egg—that’s genius!

Also, city driving sure does come with its own set of challenges. Glad the pothole helped you out with the frozen hood issue! Stay warm and cozy!

  2. Now that is a lovely haul of veggies!!!! Glad that you got to go to your demonstration and for the most part were supportive as they drove by.
Your meal looks lovely. Ranch dressing probably gave the chicken coating a bit more of a burst of flavour.

    God bless.

    1. The meal was delicious -- and we had it again tonight! I don't usually serve the same dish two nights in a row, but I got busy today and we did have enough for another full dinner.

A lot of people use mayonnaise instead of eggs, but my husband hates it so much -- which is what made me try the ranch. I actually think I like it better than eggs!

  3. Love that photo of Frankie delicately nibbling her veggies! We don't get vacuum sealed veg here, I don't think I've ever come across it on my travels either. I love sweet potatoes!
How gorgeous is that nightie I don't wear clothes in bed but I'd wear that to go out in with sandals in the Summer. xxx
