Sunday Score!

Tommy picked up my FlashFood order today.  I hardly ever shop on Grand Island. You have to pay to go over the Grand Island bridge, so it's not in my regular rotation.  However, there is a State Park (Beaver Island) there, which Frankie and I explore in the off season.  Since he was driving over the island to get to Niagara Falls, he was going to be within minutes of that store, and they had some rockin' deals.  One-pound logs of fresh mozzarella cheese were going for two bucks.  I ordered six -- saving something like six bucks a piece.  Half a log will go on a pizza tomorrow, then the rest will go into the freezer. This was too good of a deal to pass up.

I wanted the carrots as a side for dinner. Even though I am frugal, there are some things it's worth it to splurge on -- like Norwegian salmon.  My thinking is to spend where it makes a difference, then save on the rest.  The carrots were a buck, and the citrus (orange & grapefruit) topping for the fish was homemade from fruit we were given.  Rice (a wild mix) on the side came from Ollies, so that was a discount too.  I put walnuts, raisins, and dates in with the rice. The evaporated milk on deal is just going to be used for a batch of ice-cream. I saved around a buck and a quarter on it, so that was a nice score as well.

Our dinner was tasty. We ate it while watching the Super Bowl, although I had a very low level of interest in the game -- didn't care about either team, and the game was very one-sided anyway.  But our dinner was delicious!  My wine consumption has been down a lot these days, but a bottle has been in our refrigerator since Easter when I served Salmon Wellington.  It's a Rioja, which doesn't taste that great on its own -- but when you pair it with salmon, it comes alive.  Neither one of us cleaned our plates, so there's one portion for The Big Guy to bring for lunch tomorrow.

I have no outfit to show off, as I stayed in the entire day, which was kind of nice! I hope your Sunday went well too.

  1. You keep Rioja in the fridge? Is that an American thing or just something you do? A bottle lasts a few days in this house! Campo Viejo is our favourite. I'm talking about booze at 8.15am, I think I've got a problem! xxx

  2. Wow, what a fantastic deal on the cheese. $2 a pound is unheard of these days, way to go!
