A Day of Making
I made nut butter today. This time, I did not add black walnuts -- so it isn't dog toxic. We still have some left from my last effort, but I don't like to run out!
My adventure in dough started last night before heading to bed!
Both of my "makes" today have a difficult clean-up. The peanut butter is a gloppy, oily mess. Dough is a sticky mess. Since each process has some watch and wait time (grinding for the nut butter, kneading for the dough), I at least have time to clean while that stage goes on. I am curious about how you wash dishes. Tommy drives me crazy as he leaves the water running as he washes each piece and moves around the kitchen. But since he cleans up, I won't be a snark about it. But it makes me crazy!
Whenever I am active in the kitchen, my bed stands a better chance of staying made until later in the day. Especially when nut butter is going. Frankie is particularly interested in that!

The weather wasn't great today, so I stayed home. That is why I have no outfit to show off. But I do have a Flashfood brag. I ordered it, and Tommy picked it up on the way home. This meal is a perfect example of why we eat at home. Including the wine, we had a six buck per plate dinner. A strip steak dinner would be around thirty bucks a plate. Then there would be tax and tip. A glass of Cotes du Rhone would be anywhere from $12 - $15 per glass.
I sauteed the steaks on the stove, then let them rest, with goat cheese smeared on the top. I added the onions and olives to the pan, then the pierogi. The peas were cooked in the microwave. It's not unusual to ask Tommy to grade/critique the meal since I don't usually cook steak this way. He gave me a 10! So this was a winner. And I have three more packages of pierogi and three logs of goat cheese in the freezer for other meals.
It was a good day for making!
Look at Frankie ragging your bed, so funny!
ReplyDeleteNo dishwasher in this house, everything's washed by hand - usually by me as Jon cooks.
Mmmm...goat's cheese!
Don't you have a pub chain similar to our Wetherspoons? The owner buys ailing historical town centre buildings and turns them into pubs. His ethos when he started was to make pubs more women-friendly so the toilets are gorgeous and menu is calorie counted (as so many women seem to diet!) A bottle of my favourite white Zinfandel is £10 and a pint of ale is £1.70. No wonder the staff know us by name! x
Wow! I wish we had an equivalent, but there is not. We do have *a lot* of bars in Buffalo, though. We are known as "A drinking town with a football problem!"
DeleteI usually fill my largest cooking container used with water, then use it to rinse dishes to go in the dishwasher, and finally wipe/rinse the large container to go in dishwasher too. I try to clean up as I go, so there aren't too many dishes to do after supper. If I cook, Carey usually does the after supper clean up. We have a water well, so we are both very aware of not running too much water, as it would be NO fun to have the well run dry. It has happened to some people in the neighborhood, but never to us. Knock on wood!
ReplyDeleteHaving a well really must make you water conscious. Tommy does the dishes most nights too because I cook. I end up putting away the dishes. Usually late, right before bed!
DeleteI fill my sink with dish water and wash my dishes and then rinse them. How neat that you make your own peanut butter. Do you do that for health reasons?
ReplyDeleteWe are old school! I make nut butter at home because it is healthier, but it also saves a lot of money. Mostly when you add in nuts other than peanut butter. Sometimes I get lazy and use mixed nuts, but those have either palm or cottonseed oil -- not healthy! I add neither salt nor sugar. So it really is healthier!
